Authentication

The differences between ResiDex and Windows Authentication

ResiDex Authentication

ResiDex Authentication specifies that the user-name and password for using ResiDex is managed in the ResiDex staff information.

Assigning User-Names

The user-name used to log into ResiDex is specified in the field named "User-name" on the Staff List.  The user name is also shown on the lower right of the Staff Profile screen.

The Initial Password

The password for a newly defined user is "password".  A user logging in for the first time will use "password" to sign in and will immediately be prompted to change their password. Passwords are case sensitive, user names are not.

Password Sharing

ResiDex users are expected to keep their ResiDex passwords secret. They are not to be shared with other users, or even with managers. If their password is forgotten, a ResiDex user with the role of Staff Manager may reset the password by clicking the "Reset Password" button next to the user name on the Staff Profile screen. When ResiDex Authentication is in use, users may share a Windows Login, as long as everyone using ResiDex uses only their own personal ResiDex login and password.

Setting User Roles

A new user will not be able to log in unless ResiDex roles have been setup for their user name.

Windows Authentication

Windows Authentication specifies that user-name and passwords for ResiDex users are defined and managed in Windows. Essentially what this means is a user's windows user-name and password should be the same as their ResiDex user-name and password.

The Windows log-in name is used by ResiDex to authenticate a user. ResiDex 'reads' the log-in name of the person currently logged into the PC.  It looks for a ResiDex staff member with a matching user name.  The user name is not case sensitive

The user name is specified in ResiDex in the field named "User-name" on the Staff List. The user name is also shown on the lower right of the Staff Profile screen. This must exactly match the Windows log-in name or the user log-in will fail.

Password Sharing

If Windows Authentication is used, it is imperative that each user must use their own Windows login and password, and must never share them, even with managers. If their password is forgotten, the user will need to follow standard Windows procedures for having the password reset.

Setting Up User Roles

A new user will not be able to log in unless ResiDex roles have been setup for their user name.
